Rideshare insurance in Australia: what drivers should compare

Start with insurers that will confirm your exact passenger and delivery work in writing. NRMA verifies occasional rideshare and takeaway delivery with a combined 10-hour weekly vehicle limit; Youi accepts disclosed rideshare under standard policies. Compare the current PDS, Certificate of Insurance, every applicable excess and any mutual fund discretion—not a headline monthly price.
The short list is only a starting point
Rideshare cover is not established by the insurer’s brand name alone. The useful test is whether the insurer accepts the vehicle’s actual work—passenger trips, takeaway delivery, parcel work, weekly hours and every driver—and records that use on the quote and Certificate of Insurance. Save those documents with the PDS and any supplementary terms.
NRMA’s current FAQ is unusually specific: its four listed personal motor cover levels can include occasional rideshare, but the vehicle has a combined 10-hour weekly limit across all drivers. It also discusses takeaway delivery, while directing full-time or catering delivery users towards business insurance. Youi says rideshare can be covered through its standard car policies when quoted as business use under “Taxi – Uber and other ridesharing services”; it does not describe a separate rideshare policy.

Provider comparison: what is verified and what still needs confirmation
This table deliberately separates a provider statement from a completed suitability check. “Obtain confirmation” does not mean a provider refuses rideshare; it means the evidence reviewed here is not enough to promise cover. Underwriting can also change between drivers, vehicles, states and renewal dates.
| Provider or product | What the reviewed source supports | What the driver must still verify |
|---|---|---|
| NRMA | Occasional rideshare on four listed cover levels; disclosed use on the COI; rideshare or takeaway delivery subject to a combined 10-hour weekly vehicle limit. | Premium, base and additional excesses, exact delivery activity, platform requirements and consequences around the hours limit. |
| Youi | Disclosed rideshare under standard Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft or Third Party Property Only policies; quote as specified business use. | Whether food or parcel delivery is accepted, any usage limit, all excesses and the exact wording on the schedule. |
| Ride Protect / GT Insurance | Official sources market rideshare-oriented commercial motor insurance and direct buyers to policy documents. | Current insurer, eligibility, PDS version, excesses, kilometre limits, downtime or replacement-car terms and exclusions. |
| AAMI, RACV, Allianz or Bingle | No sufficiently specific current official rideshare acceptance was established in this review. RACV publishes current motor policy documents. | Ask for written acceptance of every paid use and ensure it appears on the COI; read the current PDS rather than relying on a comparison page. |
| Taxicare / advertised “Rideshare Taxi” offer | Taxicare says it holds AFSL 292888 and provides insurance through an APRA insurer. | Product identity, insurer, PDS and a personal quote. A claimed $140 monthly figure was not verified as a generally available quote. |

Insurance, CTP and discretionary mutual protection are different
CTP or the relevant state injury scheme deals with bodily injury; it is not cover for damage to your car or another person’s property. Youi specifically says its NSW and South Australian CTP products include rideshare passengers, while directing drivers elsewhere to check their local provider. Property cover then depends on the selected comprehensive or third-party policy.
A conventional insurance policy is governed by its PDS, schedule and contract. Motor Cover Mutual’s official search listing describes the organisation as the operator of a discretionary mutual fund. A mutual’s rules and product documents may give its decision-maker discretion over protection payments, so it should not be presented as interchangeable with an insurance contract without reading those documents. Its rideshare page was under maintenance when checked, making direct written confirmation essential.

Use-case checks that expose expensive gaps
A driver doing two short evening passenger shifts may fit an occasional-use policy; a driver logged on most days may not. Under NRMA’s wording, the weekly limit applies to the vehicle across all listed drivers, so sharing the car does not create a fresh allowance. A driver mixing passenger work with meals or parcels should list each activity instead of assuming one endorsement covers all gig work.
Compare the base excess alongside age, inexperienced-driver, unlisted-driver and any business-use excess. Then check agreed versus market value, towing, choice of repairer, hire car or downtime, windscreen terms, modification or accessory treatment, and what happens while waiting for a trip. A low premium can be poor value if the excess is unaffordable or the car that earns the income is off-road without a replacement benefit.
- Describe platforms, passenger work, food and parcel delivery, realistic weekly hours, overnight parking and every driver.
- Ask the insurer to identify the applicable PDS clauses and put accepted use on the Certificate of Insurance.
- Check platform minimums separately; a platform injury-support package is not a replacement for motor property cover.
- Reconfirm cover when hours, platforms, drivers, vehicle or work type changes—and again at renewal.

How to treat price examples
Do not turn one advertisement or screenshot into a market price. The search did not verify “Rideshare Taxi at $140 per month” as a generally available product. One search result showed a roughly $140 example tied to a specific vehicle and insured value, which demonstrates why the context matters rather than validating a standard rate.
Request like-for-like quotes on the same day using the same driver, address, vehicle, annual distance, paid-use hours, cover level, value basis and excess. Record annual totals as well as instalment fees. Only compare a discretionary mutual contribution with an insurance premium after identifying differences in payment rights, limits and exclusions.

Common questions
Does ordinary comprehensive insurance automatically cover Uber or DiDi?
No assumption is safe. Some insurers may accept rideshare within a standard policy, but the paid use must be disclosed and accepted. Require it on the Certificate of Insurance and read the current PDS and schedule.
Does rideshare passenger cover also include Uber Eats or parcel delivery?
Not necessarily. NRMA expressly addresses passenger rideshare and takeaway delivery subject to conditions; the reviewed Youi wording does not establish delivery acceptance. Tell the insurer every activity and obtain written confirmation.
Is a discretionary mutual fund insurance?
Do not describe it as ordinary insurance without checking its legal and product documents. Mutual protection can depend on fund rules and discretion. Ask for the product guide, rules, limits, exclusions, dispute process and a clear explanation of payment rights.
Can every driver obtain rideshare insurance for $140 a month?
No general $140 offer was verified. Pricing is individual and can vary with the vehicle, location, driver history, work pattern, cover and excess. Compare personal written quotes rather than treating an example as a promise.
